In this article Wendy writes:

One choice for someone leaving the public sector is to work as an interim manager.

Interim management allows an organization to hire a manager with particular expertise on a short term contract for a limited amount of time; for example, to provide temporary cover for a role or to achieve specific objectives.

Interim management is different to consultancy; you will do the job, not give advice on how the job should be done.

Working as an interim gives you great flexibility, strengthens your CV and provides an opportunity to strengthen your network. Some people work as interim managers between longer-term permanent roles but others make a choice to spend their careers as interims.
