IIM publishes 6th Annual Interim Management Survey
Monday 18th July 2011
The Interim Hub congratulates the Institute of Interim Management (IIM) for their 6th annual Interim Management survey, which was published this morning. Over 1.5 thousand interim managers and providers participated in the survey, and this 68-page report shows some extremely interesting, and in parts very encouraging, results relating to the state of the interim management market and shifting patterns and trends within the industry.
The overview is certainly a promising one in many areas. There appears to be a split of 60-40 in favour of working interims, which is up from 50-50 in the second half of 2010. Whereas the consensus among interims is that day rates are still too low, the figures show that rates are in fact on the increase. The gap between assignments has also narrowed considerably since 2010.
Despite a certain lack of confidence in the market amongst individual interims, the private sector is recovering quite strongly, and there is reported recovery in the public sector, albeit slight. The not-for-profit sector has, however, suffered a downturn in the use of interims.
Pleasingly, the data shows that interims expect the market to steadily become busier over the next three years.
The Provider section of the survey lists the top 100 service providers as voted for by interim managers, based on factors that interims feel to be important, such as the ability to maintain strong relationships with their clients and candidates.
There is information about the general use of social networking sites such as LinkedIn, online job search engines and individual company websites to aid business development and assignment search.
There is also a section relating to the Agency Worker Regulations, about which 38% of interims admit they know little to nothing about. The regulations, which come into force in October 2011, will affect all interim managers, and their approach to contracts and trading status in particular must be carefully considered on an assignment-to-assignment basis, in order to remain out of scope of the regulations. This is a subject which the Interim Hub advises that interims become much more familiar with, and Ad van der Rest, co-chairman of the IIM give some interesting guidance on this new legislation on page 55 of the report.
