Why interviewing an interim needs to be different

Aimed at those who are considering hiring an interim, Mike Measures, MD of of Interimconnect offers some very useful pointers in the third of his blogs written for the employment law website HRBullets.co.uk.

Interviewing for a permanent role is very different to interviewing for an interim assignment, and Mike explains how differences in the way interims operate (i.e. through their own limited company) can offer greater flexibility for an employer regarding factors such as assignment length and terms of engagement. He explains how an interim is engaged via a business-to-business relationship to bring about change or complete a specific task or project, and how this difference impacts on the hiring process.

"In terms of the interview, the client should look at the potential engagement, from a commercial viewpoint, as he would the engagement of a supplier, taking into account the added dimension that the interim manager becomes part of the management team or heading up a discrete project", says Mike.

He goes on to offer guidance on interview preparation, comments on normal protocol for collecting references and emphasises the importance on the Return on Investment (ROI) delivered by the interim.
